The United States Holocaust Memorial Museum stands as the nation’s foremost institution dedicated to documenting, studying, and interpreting the history of the Holocaust. It serves as a poignant memorial to the millions of lives lost during this dark chapter in human history.

The Holocaust, occurring between 1933 and 1945, was a meticulously orchestrated campaign of persecution and extermination of European Jewry by Nazi Germany and its collaborators. While six million Jews bore the brunt of this genocide, other groups such as the Roma, individuals with disabilities, Poles, and others faced similar fates due to racial, ethnic, or national motives. Additionally, millions more endured severe oppression and death under Nazi rule, including gay men, Jehovah’s Witnesses, Soviet prisoners of war, and political dissidents.

At the core of the Museum’s mission is the imperative to deepen understanding of this unparalleled tragedy, honor the memory of its victims, and prompt visitors to contemplate the moral and spiritual dimensions of the Holocaust, along with their own roles as participants in a democratic society.
