Turning Imaginations Way, Way Up
Cherry Hill, N.J. – The Garden State Discovery Museum’s Backstage Theater has been undergoing some great renovations, which will be revealed on Friday, June 6, 2014 at 11 AM during the ribbon cutting. The new theater, which will be called The Horizon Foundation Backstage Theater, celebrates 1920’s nostalgia with crimson and gold accents, mood lighting, new wardrobe, and plenty for our littlest thespians to take the stage. This was all made possible with a grant from The Horizon Foundation for New Jersey, the charitable arm of Horizon Blue Cross Blue Shield of New Jersey.
Not only is The Horizon Foundation for New Jersey giving the theater a brand new look, they are also sponsoring The Discovery Theatre Players and their productions. The Discovery Theatre Players have a long standing tradition of introducing very young children to theater. Each year they put on 6-8 productions and each takes children and adults into a fairy tale world where imaginations soar.
Programs Director Paul McElwee said, “These days, kids are wrapped up with technology, which can be great learning tools and entertaining. However, I think it’s extremely important to make sure people are holding onto the idea that amazing things can come out of a child’s mind without the aid of some sort of device. Imagination is a very powerful thing and live, interactive theater is a wonderful way to cultivate it.”
Museum Director Kelly Lyons said, “Our extremely popular theater programs have been expanding over the last ten years. We are always happy to gain support from partnerships and the local community to continue our mission to foster a life long love of learning through creative programming and play. We are excited and grateful that The Horizon Foundation for New Jersey gave us an opportunity to update our physical space and give it a much needed face lift.”
Following the June 6th ribbon cutting, head into The Horizon Foundation Backstage Theater for some improvisational performances from our Discovery Theatre Players. Check out Kris Clayton as he juggles and stilt walks around the museum in his Horizon Blue Cross Blue Shield of New Jersey t-shirt!
